Woven Wardrobe: Cotton / Shirting

Woven Wardrobe: Cotton / Shirting

Woven Wardrobe Series

Cotton / Shirting

May 13-31, 2024

Sliding Scale: $1750-$2250 (see below for details)

** postponed to 2025!**

During this class we will:

- weave fine cotton shirting, with an option to dye yarn and explore stripes, checks, or plaid

- create a custom pattern for a button-down shirt

- learn techniques for sewing collars, button bands, button holes, curved hems, sleeve plackets, and more

In an effort to create continuity between these in-person intensives, there will be opportunities to meet remotely as a group to support each other in our ongoing study, share our work and insights, and ask and answer questions.

As we weave and sew our garments, we also weave ourselves together. These are not the only clothes we’ll ever need - threads will wear thin, our bodies will change. By putting our time and attention into connection and relationship, we’re not only building the skills to clothe ourselves into the future, but also forging a community to support us in doing that, company for the task ahead.

And— the place where we do this matters. During our month together, we’ll experience the changing of the seasons and participate in the ongoing tasks of sustaining rural life in the mountains of northern Vermont. During the class, students are encouraged to stay in the group farmhouse and prepare meals, play music, and share stories together.

  • Pricing

Each three-week session is offered at $2000, with a sliding scale of $1750-$2250. Anything you pay above $2000 will go towards participants requesting scholarship funding. The $2000 base price reflects a rate of $20/classroom hour for 100 official classroom hours. (In practice, many of our activities spill over into evenings and weekends, as students feel inspired!) This pays our teachers and assistants a living wage, and covers the operating and maintenance costs of our studio and equipment. If you’d like help thinking about how to use the sliding scale, this article and this graphic by Alexis J. Cunningham are helpful resources.
