Although ikat has been woven all over the world, it is mostly associated with cultures along the silk routes. In this workshop we will look at how European weavers, inspired by imported textiles from the East, developed their own techniques and approaches to tying and dyeing threads. We will look at the block weft ikats developed in France during the 17th century and warp ikat from Mallorca, which is still being produced today. And because we will have the looms set up for more exploration, we will experiment a little with some of the shifted weft techniques from Japan just for fun.
